Dr. Brown is a Professor who joined the Department in 1994. His primary teaching responsibilities include Environmental Conservation (WL 110), Limnology (WL 370), Fish and Wildlife Biometrics (WL 440), and Quantitative Fisheries Science (WL 720). He advises and mentors both undergraduate and graduate students. His appointment is 69% teaching and 31% research. He has extensive statistical and computer responsibilities.

Dr. Brown is the principal investigator on numerous research projects, including one from the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. His areas of expertise include fishery management, fish ecology, and fish culture. His current research thrusts are focused on natural mortality, fish nutrition, and carp ecology and management.

Dr. Brown is coeditor of the book Analysis and Interpretation of Freshwater Fisheries Data published by AFS.  He is a Past President of the North Central Division of the American Fisheries Society, the Dakota Chapter, and the Texas A&M Chapter. He is a co-advisor of the SDSU American Fisheries Society (AFS) Subunit.
