Computer Recommendations

Currently, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences does not require its undergraduate majors to have computers. However, we highly recommend it. The University offers access to computers in campus computer labs, but having one’s own computer is more efficient. We offer the following guidelines for those who choose to bring a computer to campus.

For the freshman and sophomore years, basic computing functions can be met by most currently available computers. A computer configuration for the first two years should include the Microsoft office software suite (e.g., Word, Excel, and Power Point) and a basic laser printer. Appropriate networking and Web browsing software is available from the University to students at no additional cost.

As a student progresses through our program computing needs change. The functional needs in the first two years are less than those of the junior and senior years. Thus, spend as much as you can comfortably afford. However, the more you invest, the longer your system will remain viable. On the other hand, computer technology continues to evolve at a rapid rate. Newer technology is always right around the corner, but this should not deter you from buying the system you need.

Although laptop computers cost more than desktop systems, laptops are more effective for most classes and offer greater flexibility to students. You should be able to buy laptop systems under $1000, remembering, of course, that you get what you pay for. With the fast pace of innovation, particularly in processor speed, any recommendation for a specific level of system will soon be out of date.

Any current computer bought from a mainstream manufacturer should work in the University computing environment. Technology continues to evolve at a very rapid pace, but a system that meets or exceeds the targets outlined below should serve academic computing needs for at least three years (i.e., 2007 through 2010).

·         Contemporary Intel Pentium or AMD dual-core processor/CPU

·         512 MB (1 GB preferred) of memory (RAM)

·         40 GB (80 GB preferred) hard disk

·         A monitor that can display at least 1024 x 768 resolution in 16-bit color

·         CD-RW/DVD drive

·         Ethernet interface (100/full compatible) and wireless card for connecting to the campus network.

·         MS Office 2003 or later, but not MS Vista

·         Norton Anti-virus software

·         Lavasoft Ad-aware or Spybot Search and Destroy (malware packages)

·         512 MB (1 GB recommended) USB flash drive
