Pond management has long been a topic of interest for the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. South Dakota has a tremendous pond resource, with many of the ponds having fish communities. Management activities typically focus on warmwater fishes such as largemouth bass and bluegill, but some West River ponds are managed with trout.
