Graduate Admissions

Each Department faculty member selects the graduate students that they advise. Unconditional admission is required in order to work on a graduate degree in the Department, and unconditional admission can only be achieved if a faculty member in the Department agrees to serve as advisor to a student. Faculty research interests are shown in the Faculty portion of this website. Contact with specific faculty members concerning admission and graduate research assistantship availability is encouraged. In general, we only accept students to whom we can provide a graduate assistantship.

Application material information and forms are available in the Graduate Admissions portion of the University website. Materials needed for application to the Department’s graduate program include:

1.  a completed Graduate School application form,

2.  a complete set of transcripts,

3.  a resume,

4.  two to three letters of recommendation,

5.  Graduate Record Exam scores (verbal, quantitative, and analytical), and

6.  a letter of interest stating the specific area of wildlife or fisheries that is of most interest to the student.

7.  International students have additional requirements that can be found on the Graduate Admissions portion of the University website.

All the above material is submitted to the Graduate School. After the student’s application is complete, the Graduate School forwards the application to the Department for action.

When the completed application is received by the Department numerous actions are possible. If the applicant meets the minimum Graduate School entrance requirements, and a faculty member in the Department has already agreed to accept the student as an advisee, the applicant receives unconditional admission to our graduate program.

If the student meets the minimum Graduate School entrance requirements, but has not had a faculty member in the Department accept them as an advisee, the student receives a conditional admission. The condition being that they find a faculty member in the Department who agrees to serve as their academic advisor. Such conditionally admitted students receive a letter from the Department describing the process involved in attempting to receive unconditional admission.

If a student does not meet minimum Graduate School entrance requirements the Department Head rejects the applicant and returns the signed application to the Graduate School for their further action.

In rare cases a faculty member may agree to work with a student who does not meet all Graduate School entrance requirements. Such students are categorized as Special Admission, non-degree students. These students must then meet specified performance standards before an unconditional admission can be granted. This type of admission can only occur after agreement by the faculty member to serve as academic advisor to the student. Such students are not eligible for assistantships.

No student can enter our program, be in our major, or be working on one of our graduate degrees without having one of our Department faculty members agree to serve as their advisor.
